Soft Robotics Inc. is a venture-backed startup in Bedford, MA that integrates patented soft actuator technologies, a proprietary vision system, and artificial intelligence stack into robotic gripping, and autonomous manipulation solutions that can handle items of varying size, shape and weight with high-speed, precision, and a human-like touch. By leveraging the science of soft robotics, it is now possible to automate facilities that have traditionally depended upon manual labor for bin picking, order fulfillment, and other complex pick and place tasks. This technology is proven in manufacturing installations today and enabling new robotic solutions for the food supply chain, advanced manufacturing applications, and the e-commerce logistics industry. 


We’re looking to hire a Software Engineer to join our world class software team and to participate in R&D and Product Development activities.  The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience designing and implementing robotic systems in a production or research environment.  They will have prior experience developing autonomous systems that operate in unstructured environments, with some experience in one or more of the following areas:  perception, computer vision, manipulation, machine learning, etc.  They will work on a variety of customer-focused projects throughout the product development life cycle, from initial proofs of concept through robust production-ready implementations.


What You’ll Do


  1. Design and development of robotic systems; primary focus is on manipulation and computer vision
  2. Investigation into novel techniques for robotic grasping and manipulation to improve overall system performance
  3. Design for safety, manufacturability, reliability and test
  4. Participate in risk management and design control activities
  5. Participate in design reviews and document development activities per established product development process
  6. And other duties and projects as required.


Who You’ll Be


Minimum qualifications:

  1. BS in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent required.
  2. 2+ years of professional software development experience, or 2+ years of advanced academic training beyond a BS required
  3. Experience designing robotic systems that operate in unstructured environments, ideally for industrial automation applications
  4. Understanding of robot manipulation challenges, including sensors, perception, kinematics, motion planning, or controls required
  5. Ability to debug/troubleshoot complex robotic systems required
  6. Strong proficiency in C/C++ required
  7. Comfortable developing software in a Linux environment required
  8. Strong mathematical and analytical skills required
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Proficiency in the creation and maintenance of documentation required
  10. Demonstrated track record of exceptional individual performance in a fast-paced environment required
  11. Ability to work independently but also thrives in highly integrated team environments required
  12. Strong attention to details required


Preferred qualifications:

  1. MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent, with specialization in robotics
  2. 2+ years of experience in product development organizations, designing and implementing robotic systems
  3. Prior experience with robotic manipulation and grasping in unstructured environments
  4. Experience with machine vision or machine learning targeting manipulation based applications
  5. Experience with OpenCV and/or Open3D
  6. Experience with "best practices" such as issue tracking, static code checking, and automated testing
  7. Versatility in other disciplines (Mechanical and Electrical Engineering) or “Maker” experience
